Arjun’s Recent project “Khat” is a letter from him to his listeners

Writer- Therapman

Arjun is a rapper based in Bombay. With a deep and impactful voice, a pen that can write on almost anything and a desire to pursue his passion no matter what, Arjun is making a name for himself in the DHH scene. On looking into his discography one can find a wide array of songs. From hardcore hip hop songs like ‘ikhtiyaar’ to soft and mellow songs like “khat” which is the title track of his recent EP. In this post we are going to cover his latest EP “Khat” in detail.

Khat is a five-song project released by Arjun on the 19th July of this year. The cover art shows Arjun standing by the sea on a rainy day and looking at the clouds with wind blowing past his face. It perfectly depicts what the album is trying to say. It also gives you an idea of how the soundscape of the album is going to be and what you can expect from it.  The art work is kept simple and yet is very impactful on the listeners.

The album starts with some beautifully written poetry in the song ‘har roz’ written by Arjun himself and Vocals by his friend’s dad. Here Arjun is trying something different by reciting a poem to his listeners. The Voice and the way it has been delivered makes you feel as if he's been reciting poems since long.  Beautifully penned down thoughts with lines like “Shaam ka mtlb sirf andhera hua karta tha ab shame bhi roshan hai kyunki tum aagae ho” makes you feel that he’s celebrating life in this song and has learnt how to actually live it. The music keeps playing in the background but has been kept low to emphasise on what he’s trying to say.

Moving on to the next track “is sheher me”, the songs starts as if an old rusty radio is being turned on. The music has an old 90s era vibe. The song is an ode to Bombay city where he’ trying to find himself between rebels.  The hook is so well written and sung that it sticks to your mind. The female vocals on the hook make it more beautiful. Arjun is proudly expressing his feeling and emotions. Lines like “sleep is like cousin of death suna jabse sona chod dia” shows how focused he is on his craft. He is ready to put all the hard work to achieve his dreams which is an admirable quality of his.

With yet another beautifully sung hook in the next song ‘sitara’, Arjun has explored his singing in this track, the glimpses of which we saw in the previous track’s hook. The music has been kept around the melody of a sitar complimenting the name of the song.  In some ways this is a heartbreak song but also is a gateway to Arjun’s pent-up feelings. The second half of the song takes a turn where the sitar centric beat now turns into a synth melody and Arjun starts rapping instead of singing. A very creative way to show sadness as well as anger in one song.

When you listen to the starting ten seconds of the next song ‘dur’ you’ll think that this is yet another heartbreak sad song but just wait, let him start rapping. As confident as ever, Arjun is all about hustle in this song. He tells his story how he started dropping songs in 2020 and now everyone around him is listening to his songs. He promises to keep going till he doesn’t achieve what he wants. Perhaps the ‘dur’ here is not some person but his destination and goals he is ready to go all out for.

The last track ‘Khat’ is also the title track of this EP. This song is simply a letter to his listeners and fans where he is just like an open book trying to express himself. He is trying to tell all of what he feels. The music is celebratory as well as takes deep and dark turns in between. Lines like ‘Jo bayan kare jazbaat vo hai mard’ are bound to leave an impact on you. Towards the end he has just let himself to his listeners by showing his vulnerable side. This song truly tries to build a connection with the audience.

To conclude Arjun’s latest project ‘khat’ is a bliss to listen to on a rainy day. Kuodz to the producers who have kept the vibe soft and mellow but have also made the songs impactful with hard and punchy 808s and drums. Every song holds a surprise for you. Arjun has been as real as he could be throughout the project.

Since monsoon is amongst us, this project definitely deserves a listen and is out on all streaming platforms now. Happy Listening!
